¡Velvet Viernes!

My Spanish V-H class is addicted to Velvet. Yes, they are. No shame in that. Even the boys, even the football players!
Velvet is a Spanish TV series with a perfect balance between romance, humor and mystery. I watched season I and season II on Netflix, caught up with the third season when they were showing it in Spain, and anxiously waited for season IV to start. The moment I started watching it, I thought of my students... To be honest with you, I though of my girls, knowing they would fall in love with Alberto... Little did I know that the boys were going to love the show, too!
I usually show Velvet to my students on Fridays, after a week of hard work... There's a few scenes that I skip because they are bit too affectionate. I don't ask my students to take notes, I don't give them quizzes about the series... we just enjoy it. And we really enjoy it. But you know what? It's funny how they incorporate Velvet pretty much in anything we do in class! We look forward to Fridays...Students come through the door with a smile on their faces, snacks on their hands and saying "Velvet Vierneeeeessss! We look forward to seeing Alberto and Ana, to get mad at Cristina, to laugh with Pedro and Rita, and to enjoy the beautiful wardrobe of the late 50s early 60s, and the scenery of Madrid.

This is the third year that I am showing Velvet to my Spanish V classes. We only get to see the first season, but some students watch ahead at home. I just ask them to not ruin it for the rest, but it's funny how they come to class to tell me how far they are into the show, to tell me how mad they are at whatever they've seen, or how happy they are with the turn the story took in whatever episode they saw. This year I am doing some activities with them to incorporate Velvet, but again, no assessments about Velvet. Velvet is just to enjoy it.

After we watched a few episodes, I displayed pictures of the characters around the classroom. Students had to walk around in pairs and write something about the characters; adjectives to describe them, sentences explaining their relationship with other characters... whatever came to their mind.
Of course Alberto got a few compliments... :)

Alberto rompe-corazones :)

After that, I assigned one character to each pair of students. They had to write a full description about them, and they could use the information they had from all the post-its.

This year, since we are working on personality descriptions, we described the main characters in Velvet.

If you are showing Velvet, or if you thinking about showing Velvet, and you would like to use these pages to have your students describe the characters, click here to download this freebie!!!

So tell me, are you showing or planning on showing Velvet in class? I must warn you, it's addictive.

#TeachMoreSpanish

¿A quién quiero mentir?

A todas vosotras: GRACIAS DE TODO CORAZON!

Wait, what? Already getting ready for Back to School? What happened to Summer?
I follow many teachers on Instagram, and I am also an administrator in the Facebook's group Spanish Teachers in the US, and I see you guys are already getting ready for school!!!! yeah, yeah... some schools start earlier than others, but still... your classrooms look amazing ALREADY!!

Well, I AM excited to get my classroom ready for the new school year, maybe in a couple of weeks I'll bring my kids to school to help me set up my room (or at least to keep me company).

Ever since I got my own room, since I have been teaching my five classes in the same room, I am VERY excited about bulletin boards... A high school teacher going crazy over bulletin boards? yes, and you might be surprised to find out that a lot of Spanish teachers we have that in common! :)

At the beginning of the school year I always have one of my bulletin boards with a set of posters that give the students reasons to learn a foreign language. This is a picture of my bulletin board.

It's funny because we tend to think students pay attention to our bulletin boards, but they do! I always find one or two students reading these 10 reasons why they should learn languages .

Another one of my favorite bulletin boards to set up at the beginning of the school year is a "Frases útiles" board. With more than 75 different high frequency phrases, this has become a must have resource for Spanish teachers.

Get your students talking right away! They will love using these catchy phrases in Spanish, and they will surprise you with how quickly they become familiar with them; ¡te lo prometo! :)
What is your favorite rejoinder? One that I always say, and I didn't realized how much until a student pointed it out last year, is ¡qué desastre! I was told by this student that I must say that an average of three times per period! Ja!

And of course a cognates word wall or bulletin board is also very helpful to have. Here you have more than 130 cognates, divided into nouns, verbs and adjectives.  Simply print the different slides in different color papers and it will be visually appealing to your students, as well as an enormous help with instant language!

I will post pictures of my Frases útiles and cognados bulletin boards... I know, I know... I still don't have my classroom ready... ¡qué desastre! But in my defense, I am just trying to enjoy the last few days that I have left with my nine and almost seven years old big kids, and my almost seven month old baby... :)

Have a happy Back to School, and may this school year be the best one yet!!

World Languages Soccer Tournament!

Please salute the 2016-2017 WH World Languages Soccer Tournament Champions!
That's right! We brought the cup right where it belongs; room 287.

2016-2017 Champions

For the past 4 years we have been doing a WL Soccer Tournament at my school at the end of the school year. Who participates? The Senior classes of the languages that we offer. This year we had three teams; Spanish, Italian, and French. Next school year we will invite a senior English class, and hopefully team USA will join us! (Madame Greenberg's awesome idea!)

We started doing this Tournament because... honestly? Because seniors have already checked out by this time of the year, right? So we wanted to keep them engaged somehow, and this tournament is the perfect solution!

We started back in 2014, with the World Cup (yes, the World Cup where Spain did soooo poorly, don't remind me), and little by little this activity has soared and the majority of the school looks forward this event! Some teachers will even bring their classes out to see the games, especially the final!

We could not host this tournament without the support of our administration, so a big shoutout to the administration of our school, including the athletic director. The Physical Education teachers are also on board with us, and they let us use their field, equipment and time; THANK YOU!

And next year? Who'll be the champions? My Spanish IV class is VERY excited about next year...
